The Taekwondo Club of MARA College Banting is an active club that always has its activities planned ahead for the enjoyment and enthusiasm of its members. It can be said that the Taekwondo Club members are always out and about when it comes to participating in the activities planned. A compulsory practice session is held in every Tuesday night of schooling weeks where each practice session lasts for 2 hours which begins from 9.00pm to 11.00pm sharp. Therefore, a key importance in participating in this club is discipline as time jurisdictions mark the obedience of the club’s members.
During the practice sessions, club members are often taught by two Pro Sport Taekwondo instructors who are M. Chandran and S. Kumaran. The sessions often focus on the basic skills of Taekwondo, step sparring tactics, free sparring sessions, Taekwondo Poomse (Step Patterns), and Grading Qualification (Higher Belt Promotion).
As for the basic skills, Taekwondo encompasses the coordination of nearly the whole body such as the hands, arms and legs. This is in support of the definition of Taekwondo which is “Taekwondo is a sport for the whole physical system, generating energy in every organ of the body, developing the muscles and stimulating the brain, and thus developing the will of action”.
Sparring tactics and sessions will require the students of Taekwondo to be able to apply the basic skills learnt in response of an attack by an opponent. Therefore, precision and accuracy in demonstrating steps and counter-acting towards the attacks are essential in ensuring that the student is able to involve him or herself in a fair yet challenging sparring. Sparring also teaches the students in building confidence in them so as to be brave enough in defending oneself for the sake of self-defence.
Furthermore, Taekwondo Poomse is a syllabus of Taekwondo that is taught cumulatively as the student progresses him or herself to the higher belts. Taekwondo Poomse is a combination of many steps that needs to be familiarised and memorised by the student so as to test the ability of the student in handling complex yet overwhelming steps continuously. Some of the Taekwondo Poomse that one can learn from the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) are Taegeuk 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 Jang, Koryo, Geumgang, and Taeback.
